Endangered Species Committee convened for Gulf oil and gas exemption. The ESC held a public meeting March 31 to address the Secretary of the Interior’s request to exempt Gulf oil and gas activities from ESA requirements on national security grounds. The ESC (“God Squad”) has convened only a handful of times in its history. While this action concerns Gulf energy, not Pacific fisheries, the precedent of invoking national security exemptions under ESA is relevant to any entity whose obligations intersect with ESA-listed species or designated critical habitat.
